世界遺産・知床半島の奥地にある「カムイワッカ湯の滝」。知床連山・硫黄山を源流とするカムイワッカ川には硫黄成分を多く含む源泉が流れており、下流に連続する滝壺には天然の露天風呂（野湯）が形成されています。滝自体が温泉となっている珍しい景観から、僻地にもかかわらず、近年は多くの観光客で賑わう景勝地になりました。標高は400メートル、落差20メートルの渓流瀑です。2023年からは個人での沢登りは禁止となり、指定ツアーへの参加が必須となりました。カムイワッカはアイヌ語のkamuy（神、または神のような崇高な存在の意）、wakka（水の意）であり、この川の温泉成分が強い硫黄成分を含むため有毒であり、生物が生息できない「魔の水」の意味と解釈されています。Kamuiwakka Hot Falls is located deep in the Shiretoko Peninsula, a World Heritage Site. The Kamuiwakka River, which originates from the Shiretoko mountain range and Mt. Due to the unusual scenery of the waterfall itself being a hot spring, it has become a scenic spot with many tourists in recent years despite its remote location. It is a mountain stream waterfall with an altitude of 400 meters and a drop of 20 meters. From 2023, individual climbing will be prohibited, and it will be mandatory to participate in a designated tour. Kamuiwakka comes from the Ainu words kamuy (meaning a god or a divine being) and wakka (meaning water), and the hot springs in this river contain strong sulfur components, making them toxic and inhabitable by living things. It is interpreted as meaning “magic water”.
